Visitor Visa

Your purpose of travel must be purely business or pleasure or you will not be eligible to travel with a Visitor Visa.
You are not permitted to work during your stay in the U.S. on a visitor visa, whether you are being paid or not. You are also not allowed to attend school, university, English language courses, or take care of children as an Au-Pair.

New Information Regarding B1 and B2 Visitor Visas

If you are applying and/or renewing your tourist visa (B2), it is recommended that you consider applying for the business visa (B1/B2) instead.
The B1/B2 will enable you to travel to the United States for tourism, and for business purposes, and it has a full-5-year validity.
If your purpose of travel is to conduct business, participate in non-academic courses, attend a scientific, educational, professional or business convention or conference, meet with clients or business partners, research fashion trends, observe anything related to your work in your country of residence, attend a medical congress, or participate in other similar activities you will need a B1/B2 visa; a B2 visa will not allow you to conduct these other activities.
In addition, you can use your B1/B2 visa to make connections to other countries via the United States.

General information

1. A visa is not a guarantee of entry into the U.S. An officer of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) at the port of entry determines whether or not you may enter and your authorized duration of stay.



2. The validity of your visa has nothing to do with the authorized duration of stay. The visa's validity simply tells you during what time-period you may apply for entry into the U.S. The USCIS officer at the port of entry determines whether or not you may enter and your authorized duration of stay.



3. On board, the airline or cruise line company will provide you with a short white I-94 form, concerning your visit. You will be required to complete and sign this form. When you enter the U.S. the form will be stapled into your passport with a remark from the USCIS about the authorized duration of stay.

If you intend to stay longer, you must apply for an Extension of Stay with the USCIS. Application for an extension is a not a guarantee that your authorized duration of stay will be extended.

General Application Documents

All applicants must submit the following documents when applying for a visa. Incomplete applications cannot be processed!

• A valid passport showing at least six months' validity from the date of travel. If more than one person is shown in the passport, a separate visa application is needed for each person traveling to the U.S.
  
  Although It is recommended that your passport be valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel, this is not a requirement for Brazilian Citizens. Check the table of Foreign Passports for all other nationalities.
• The Nonimmigrant Visa Application Form DS-160 Confirmation Page with barcode, and uploaded photo. This form is available at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/
• Copy of previously issued visas
• A passport sized (5x7cm, with light background) photo for each Visa Application Form DS-160. For more detailed information please access the following information: Photo Standards
• An original receipt(s) must be submitted for each applicant as proof of the non-refundable visa application fee equivalent in Reais. All fees must be paid at Citibank in cash, in Reais. You must identify the amount of the visa fee and inform the cashier at Citibank when paying. It is necessary to present a photocopy or original of each applicant's passport at Citibank when paying this fee.
  

Effective, Friday, April 13, 2012, there will be changes in the Visa Application Fee (MRV fee). Please note: Any fees paid prior to Friday, April 13, 2012 remain valid for one year from the date of payment. There will be a 90 day grace period after which the difference between the old rate and the new rate must be paid at the Consular Section cashier. No refunds will be available to applicants who paid the higher fee.

Notes:
Holders of Diplomatic passports do NOT need to pay the visa application fee, regardless of their purpose of trip.
Applicants for G-5 or A-3 visas do NOT need to pay the visa application fee.
If you are traveling on a visitor exchange J1 program that is completely funded by the United States government, you do NOT need to pay the visa application fee.

YOU MUST HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECEIPT FROM CITIBANK AT THE TIME OF YOUR INTERVIEW. Please take into account Citibank's business hours when preparing for your appointment. If your interview is early in the morning, you may have to go to Citibank prior to the day of your interview.

Certain nationalities require the payment of a visa issuance fee (Reciprocity Fee). The Consular Section will inform you if such a fee is required, and what amount needs to be paid. To verify the fees charged for holders of Brazilian passports click here.


• Original copies of documents that show:
  
  
  • Purpose of your trip to the U.S.;
  • Convincing documents to show that you have sufficient funds to cover all expenses in the U.S. (e.g. income tax returns, last 3 paychecks, bank statements, etc.); and
  • Proof of your intention to leave the U.S. after your temporary stay.
  
  
• Certain visas require extra documentation: e.g. visas for exchange visitors, visas for students or visas for temporary workers. These documents must be submitted with your application, and are not available from the consular offices, only from the exchange organization, school or employer.



• All passports will be returned by the courier service of the Consulate. Passports will be delivered to the address provided to the courier company within 7 business days of the interview date, unless informed otherwise by the Consulate.



• The courier service requires the payment of a fee based on the address provided. The fee must be paid immediately after the interview, once the visa has been approved. Payment should be made in cash only. In Brasilia, applicants can also pay by check.

Domestic Employees:

Under certain circumstances, domestic employees/nannies may be issued B1 (business) visas to accompany their employer on a trip to the U.S. for a limited period of time. For further information about visas for domestic employees click here.
Please note that presenting fraudulent documents, or making false or misleading statements on the application form or to the interviewing officer, can result in you becoming permanently ineligible for any type of American visa.
